There are many things to say about th e likely new best seller in the Genesis lineup, but all I have to say about it is it’s a reincarnated Porsche 928. Because quarter windows.

You know, if you told me they were designed by the same person, I would probably believe you. I see enough similarities, both in overall shapes, and small details, that I could buy it.

interesting - the taillights too. Clearly some design influence there.

Didn’t they hire a bunch of design staff from the Germans?

Interesting, but t
hose tail lights have been a Genesis thing for a while already.

I can see the similarities in design but I just can’t get accustomed to the Genesis styling. I’m not a fan of the thin horizontal slits for the lamps.

Yup, after the awkward KDM stuff failed to warm the hearts of most premium buyers here, they realized that if you can’t beat em, join em.

I usually hate the fastback “sporty” CUV trend with every fiber of my being, but this one irks me a lot less, even if it is still strongly unpretty. Very close to a lifted “sporty” wagon, even if the target market is too self-conscious to admit it.

All the car companies, especially the premium brands, are trying to make lighting signatures for their cars. Genesis didn’t have one until these twin strip lamps. I think overall they work pretty well. They’re definitely better than the anonymous blobs of lamps that had been on previous Genesis designs.
The only thing that bugs me about them is on all the cars to which Genesis has applied this lighting theme, the headlights are better integrated into the fascia than the taillights. The headlights, regardless of whether they’re 1 or 2 pieces, look like they’re two distinct lamps.
The taillights
have this
body color
strip in between the two lamp strips that is obviously
not
part of the fascia and instead creates a continuous line that highlights how the taillight is probably one piece with that little strip stuck on top of it.
All the split-lamp Genesii have some variation of this little strip that makes for a single cutline for both strips.
Best I can tell this is done because the taillight is cut out from metal or a combination of metal + plastic fascia, while the headlights are pretty much surrounded by plastic fascia except for the hood.
So of course my OCD self notices this one little wart in the split lights and it bugs me, but not enough to dislike the lighting theme.

I hate most SHIT s on principle. To me t he GV70 is in line with the uber-proto SHIT from before there were SHITs , the Infiniti FX.
The only SHITs I’m willing to tolerate are ones that balance their swoopiness with not making the back window so damn small and fastback-y that it kills rear visibility & headroom. Trying to turn a CUV into a full-on fastback never works out right . BMW is the worst offender with this, followed by Mercedes.
I feel like some of the VAG SHITs like the Q8 & Atlas Cross Sport have relatively upright rear windows that are more stylish without being so compromised like the the full-on fastback attempts like the X6 . The Cayenne Coupe sorta fulfills this as well. They may be the SHIT option in their respective lineup but they still are fully functional, if slightly less voluminous in back than their CUV counterparts.
The BMW X2 and Mercedes GLA are kind of in a borderline state here because their rear windows are relatively upright but also tiny. The new GLA is taller though.
The Porsche Cayenne Coupe and the rest of the Audi CUV Sportbacks that aren’t the Q8 are in a different gray area as they’re trying to be fastbacks but not so damn swoopy like BMW & Mercedes.

I think the Q8 really handles it best there - definitely an issue of the angle of the rear window. Some of those others are trying really hard to be “dynamic” or “expressive” or some other babble penned by dorks.
I see the GLA and X2 as in a way lifted hatches/hot hatches rather than being a butch as their creators have intended while aiming them at those who will likely veer into you while texting and “driving”.
I dislike that Porsche at the end, and loathe the blue Audi, ugh, reminds me of the 3er GT. Infiniti FX, first version, was a really solid design, aged very well and expanded a segment.

Funny how t he OG FX back window looks positively upright compared to almost everything else here. The 2nd gen FX is drawn a little more tightly but still more successful of a back end design than most of these.
To me t he Cayenne Coupe and Audi Sportbacks get a slight bit of credit above the BMWs and Mercedeses on account of having slightly more upright windows. I don’t like them but they draw less ire from me.

I haven’t made a morphing GIF in like 20 years, but now I kind of want to expand that one so the 928 morphs into the GV 70.

It is upright, relying on the side windows to give the illusion of being racy. Some CUVs have also used this trick. The 2nd gen FX always bugged me - catfish face, tacky vents, maybe a little blobby. The first one is a pretty pure design.
Maybe it’s the customer base of these things that also bugs me, entitled clueless people. These are the ones who will cut you off and honk back when you honk at them.
